Construction PSL/KDL (7+PQE)

Job Description

Job title: Construction PSL/KDL (7+PQE)

Company: Hays

Job description: The Firm
This is a sector focused international law firm. They have over 600 lawyers working across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. They operate within the construction, aviation and shipping industries, and provide advice across insurance, commodities and energy.
The Knowledge team
The KM team consists of 8 Knowledge Counsels and three Knowledge Management Paralegals in the London office, one Knowledge Lawyer in the Hong Kong office and one in Sydney covering Australia. The Knowledge Lawyers are qualified solicitors, each with over 10 years\’ fee earning experience in their respective areas.

The aim of the KM team is to ensure that, in line with the firm\’s business strategy, the firm is able to offer technical excellence with efficient delivery, so as to provide clients with valued quality legal advice globally.

The Construction team
The construction team advises on all aspects of construction law and contracts for a wide range of clients. Their particular focus is large disputes for EPC contractors on international projects, primarily in the fields of transport, energy, infrastructure and offshore/marine construction.

The London team works closely with the construction teams in the other offices, in particular those in the Middle East, Hong Kong and Australia. It is the principal hub for undertaking international disputes.

The international nature of the work is recognised and commented upon by the directories which rank them in Legal 500. Their caseload is high value. The majority of their work involves disputes in excess of £50m, with many significantly in excess of £100m.

Over the last six years, most of their UK work has been on complex engineering projects; in particular, offshore wind farm projects and waste-to-energy.

The London team is led by four partners, all of whom have strong reputations in the market: All Associates in the London team work for all four Partners, ie. Associates are not allocated to a single Partner. The team consists of over 90 lawyers.

Whilst the team principally works on disputes, it does some non-contentious work amounting to around 5-10% of turnover, especially on large and complex EPC contracts, such as rail and renewable energy projects.

The Role
The construction team would like someone to drive forward their knowledge-based marketing. This will include monitoring legal/industry developments such as new cases, new forms of contract, etc., and then help increase brand awareness by working with the practising lawyers in the team to publish articles and bulletins. Also, to help with seminars/training sessions for clients – this might involve research on topics that the group is giving seminars on and preparing slides for training sessions/seminars. The role will involve, as much as anything, providing an impetus/momentum for this work because, at the moment, the group finds that it does not progress things because the associates are too busy on cases.

The Construction Knowledge Counsel will also work with the existing KM team to expand and promote the KM function within the Construction practice and the wider firm to create an environment where knowledge can be easily shared.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Track record of high quality fee earning experience undertaking construction work (at least 7 years\’ PQE) gained in-house or, ideally, within a global law firm;
  • Previous experience working as a Professional Support/Knowledge Lawyer, or the ability to demonstrate an active involvement in KM initiatives whilst a fee earner;
  • Good presentation skills;
  • Keen interest in business development, marketing, professional training and development;
  • Project management skills, and ability to motivate and influence others to achieve goals;
  • Self-motivated and excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate confidently at all levels;
