Job description: Rooted works on social design projects impacting and with UK Black communities. Our work starts with design research, prototyping ideas and strategy. We offer Design consultancy to our clients, who are often wanting to better understand the needs of Black communities, in relation to existing and future services or solutions.

The Designers, bring design and research skills to our projects, leaning into creativity and staying laser focused on ensuring the voices of our communities and bringing challenge were needed.

The Senior Designers are typically the most experienced design and research practitioners on our projects. They are often thinking about ways to surface new and provocative insights, whilst ensuring they are not extractive.

Our Senior Designers have high degree of agency, with support from other designer and Strategic or Project Lead.

Design + Research Strategy

Leading the research and design approach for projects

• Taking a lead in creating the most effective way to do research and design engagement with communities and stakeholders
• Responsible for taking a design-led approach, working iteratively, and taking a call on when approaches need to change
• Leading on how to do research in creative ways that are non-extractive, but nourishing to communities.

Design + Research Delivery

Doing good research and design

• Organising and delivering variety creative approaches to develop actionable insights.
• making sure that we learn about the right things by consolidating and building on existing knowledge, desk research and analysis.
• Creating the tools, methods to support research – with a focus on equity
• Designing and facilitating co-design workshops
• Creating hypothesis and Framing opportunities
• Relational Research: authentic conversation with Black individuals and communities to identify needs and assets. Translating research into rich and actionable insights.

Developing + Testing Ideas

Making ideas real with communities

• Developing prototypes of ideas to test with communities, exploring and learning about what works and what can be developed
• Creating idea iterations, justifying decisions
• Evaluating the feasibility of ideas
• Creating value proposition for ideas

Insights + Narrative Building

Developing compelling narratives

• Developing rich insights uncovering lived experiences and systemic problems and opportunities for change.
• Developing outputs that telling a compelling narrative and advocates for change
• Visualise insights and learnings

Design Operations

Setting-up research + design for success

• Recruiting community members for research
• Creating clear and engaging communications
• Curating nourishing experience and engagements

Coaching

Supporting

• Providing direction and support to other designers
• Sharing practice and knowledge where necessary
• Coaching clients on design-led and equitable approaches
