Background

The Energy Systems and Policy Analysis Group is recruiting a highly motivated Research Fellow to join a successful research team at the University of Birmingham.

The Energy Systems and Policy Analysis Group takes an interdisciplinary approach to research, providing evidence that can inform decision-making across scales. We consider techno-economic analysis, policy impacts and institutional structures in energy systems. Funded research projects cover energy storage, heat pumps and industrial decarbonisation, with Prof Radcliffe also leading the Global Centre for Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS) in the UK. 

This role focuses on the integration of technologies into local energy systems for the decarbonisation of industrial processes and heat in the UK, considering energy infrastructure and policy. There will be opportunities to contribute across the group’s portfolio. The position requires an individual with a high-level of analytical capability who can demonstrate good knowledge of energy technologies, policy and energy system scenarios. 

Role Summary

This role focuses on the integration of technologies and infrastructure into the energy system as part of the transition to net zero, particularly at a local level, including how policy can enable deployment. 

Person Specification

• First degree and PhD (or near to completion) in an area related to energy systems. 
• High level analytical capability, with knowledge of characteristics of energy technologies and infrastructure.
• Good knowledge of energy policy/regulation, and energy system scenarios.
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be an advantage:
  • Spatial mapping and the use of GIS software
  • Life cycle assessment
  • Energy storage
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly for academic and wider publication. 
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
