Job Description

As Head of UK Government Relations and Public Policy, you’ll be responsible for strengthening Trainline’s voice and reputation in support of our aggressive growth plans. Reporting to our Director of Government Relations and Public Policy, you will be responsible for moving perception with key government, political and public policy audiences.

In a period of major change in UK rail and the technology underpinning it, your team will be supported by our award winning Legal, Comms and Industry Relations functions to influence debates and unlock commercial opportunities. You will deliver counsel at senior levels of the business and help drive our external public policy agenda.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing an advocacy strategy for Trainline across key stakeholder audiences. Working closely with Industry Relations team to support on industry audience engagement.
  • Building a distinctive position on key public policy issues as they relate to Trainline’s commercial interests.
  • Providing senior counsel on political and policy issues and integrating counsel through the organisation at appropriate levels.
  • Growing and developing the Government Relations team within the Corporate Affairs function which also includes our Industry and Communications teams
  • Developing an alliance-based model with sector and broader industry to jointly campaign on areas of common interest.
  • Identifying and establishing a network of political and wider policy making community supporters for Trainline.
  • Providing internal counsel to Brand, Product, Tech and Data teams on interaction with government, political and policy community.

This is a career defining role for someone passionate about policy, public affairs and technology and the difference transport tech can make to customers, industry and the wider green agenda. You will play a key part in helping tell the story of a product that is changing the way we travel by inspiring millions of people to make more environmentally sustainable travel choices every day.

Qualifications

We’re looking for creative big thinkers with small egos to achieve our ambitious plans. You’ll have deep experience in government relations and policy with a proven network of personal contacts within Westminster and beyond, with an impressive track record of influencing policy and political debate. You’ll be used to working in a fast-paced environment ideally within Tech, Travel, Mobility or a broader regulated environment, and will know how to take an innovative, integrated approach to strategic policy execution.

Key attributes should include:

  • Highly driven and ambitious, comfortable working within disruptive organisations seeking rapid growth, opening markets and challenging incumbents.
  • Proven ability to operate at a senior level internally, comfortable advising at exec levels of organisations.
  • Deep track record in engaging senior political, regulatory, media and commercial audiences.
  • Confident with commercial acumen and budget responsibility. Experienced in opening markets or launching offerings or new products in a high scrutiny sector.
  • Understanding of data-led organisations and putting audience analysis to effect in external communications.
  • Skilled influencer and story-teller with seniors, peer group and junior colleagues.
  • Understanding and aptitude in broader corporate communication, financial communications, reputation management and crisis communication.
