Teacher Training Programme for Industry Convertors at London Screen Academy

Role Purpose & Description

The successful candidate will embark upon our teacher training programme for industry convertors. You will be based here at London Screen Academy for roughly four days per week, and spend the fifth at our teacher training provider. Your time at LSA would initially involve observing lessons, and then co-planning, co-teaching, and eventually taking responsibility for a number of classes on a reduced timetable. At the end of the programme, you would have a recognised teaching qualification. You would be paid to train, with the salary point on the unqualified teacher pay scale determined by your industry experience.

The role would suit someone with experience in the screen industries who is looking to use their knowledge and skills to educate the next generation of storytellers. In line with our mission, we are particularly keen to hear from industry practitioners who have experience of working with underrepresented groups, or who have worked in areas of the industry that are not currently represented by our staff body.

Role Responsibilities & Requirements

Responsibilities

As part of this role, you would be:

  • Undertaking bespoke training sessions within LSA
  • Attending weekly training sessions at our external provider
  • Completing reading and written assignments in order to attain your teaching qualification
  • Engaging with weekly instructional coaching sessions with your coach
  • Co-planning and then planning your own lessons
  • Observing, co-teaching, and then solo teaching, progressing to a 60% timetable by the end of Year 1
  • Helping a form tutor to run form time sessions
  • Reflecting regularly on your own practice
  • Sharing your industry expertise with teaching and specialist colleagues where possible
  • Running an extra-curricular activity as part of our LSAx enrichment programme
  • Safeguarding the wellbeing of all students

Requirements

  • Essential
    • Experience in the Film & TV industries
    • A commitment to training full time
    • Demonstrable research into teaching as a career, and LSA in particular
    • Alignment with LSA’s mission
       
  • Desirable
    • An understanding of or experience working with underrepresented groups or niche sectors of the screen industries

Key information about the training programme

  • Duration: 18 months to 2 years
  • Qualification: Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship (Level 5), which includes the Diploma in Education and Training, and the Level 2 Safeguarding award. Following completion of the programme you have the option to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS)
  • Support provided: Weekly training with an external provider plus bespoke professional development sessions within LSA, and an LSA mentor who provides weekly coaching
