Kōrero Mō te Tūranga – About the role

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga – Lecturer in Media and Communication on a permanent, full-time contract.

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington introduced Bachelor and Master of Communication degrees in 2020, complementing its existing Media Studies programs. Enrolments in the Media and Communication program, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, have grown in recent years.

We are seeking a Pūkenga – Lecturer to join our growing Media and Communication program in 2025. The role involves teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision. Candidates should have a PhD in Media Studies, Communication, or a related field, with a preference for those specializing in Māori and/or Pasifika media or communication.

The candidate will have a background in Media Studies and/or Communication research, design and teach courses, mentor and supervise diverse students, and contribute to the program’s research and administration. They should also work well in a team and understand the university’s obligations to the Treaty of Waitangi.

Key requirements:

  • A PhD in Media Studies or Communication or in a relevant field
  • An existing record of published academic research
  • A record of successful experience in delivering, designing undergraduate courses, classes in Media and/or Communication
  • The capacity to provide academic mentoring
  • A commitment to building positive and supportive relationships with colleagues
  • The capacity to work as part of a team as well as having individual responsibilities
