Description of Post

Head of Department is a key member of academic management, responsible for the efficient and effective management of the Department, its academic programmes and resources. 

This Head of Department will lead and develop the new Department of Civil Engineering and Construction.  The successful candidate will manage a team of academic and technical staff and oversee all aspects of the management of the department.

The successful applicant will form part of the School Management team along with the Head of School. The HoD will possess the requisite managerial, leadership, and administrative knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

It is expected that the School Management Team will work closely in areas of overlap such as planning, timetabling, health and safety, promotion, and marketing.

Please note: The postholder will be based at the ATU Donegal, Letterkenny Campus.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

  • A relevant first or second-class Honours degree in an Engineering, Construction or related discipline from a recognized awarding authority;
  • Not less than five years relevant and acceptable experience in an Engineering, Construction or related discipline subsequent to obtaining the qualifications referred to in (a) above
  • Applicants must have the necessary technical and administrative expertise to lead and manage professional teams to develop and deliver relevant programmes of study which respond to the needs of students, industry and the wider community.

Desirable

  • An appropriate level 9 or equivalent qualification.
  • An understanding of the Civil Engineering and Construction sector in Ireland
  • Experience of designing, developing and implementing engineering facilities relating to Civil Engineering and Construction.
  • Education or industry-based experience, including proven competence in a management or leadership role
  • Have experience of establishing, maintaining and supporting appropriate linkages with business, industry, education and training providers.
  • A knowledge of quality assurance issues and procedures within the educational context.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience of diverse modes of course delivery.
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety in the workplace.
