Writtle College is a land-based FE college in Chelmsford, Essex. First established in 1893 as the ‘County Laboratories’, Writtle College offers a range of specialist, vocational Further Education courses which provide an excellent mix of both practical and theoretical learning, giving our students the tools to launch rewarding careers. Our Further Education courses are ideal for those that have just completed their GCSEs, as well as mature learners who are looking to get back into education. Subject areas include Agriculture, Animal Studies, Conservation (Land and Wildlife Management), Equine, Floristry & Creative Crafts, Horticulture, Land-based Service Engineering, and Sport.
Our Writtle campus offers an idyllic setting for students to flourish and contributes to an enjoyable community atmosphere. Our approximately 400-acre countryside estate features a wide range of facilities, including a working farm, an equine centre, science laboratories, design studios, a canine therapy clinic, a specialist animal unit and sports provision including the UK’s first permanent 3×3 basketball courts.
Writtle College Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Anglia Ruskin University and will become a designated FE Corporation from 29th February 2024.
About the Role:
We are seeking to appoint Governors to join the Board of Writtle College. We are looking for experienced individuals to work with our colleagues to help drive forward our strategic vision to provide an exceptional, student-centred experience. This is a challenging but exciting time for Writtle College and we seek applications from individuals who share our commitment to transforming lives through innovative, inclusive and entrepreneurial education. We are ambitious for our future, and confident that we will meet the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead.
To do this, we want to ensure that we have the right balance of skills and experience on our Board. Please see the attached Role Description and Person Specification.

Ideal candidates will possess the independence to make a significant strategic contribution to Board discussions, and the ability to work with others and maintain effective working relationships. We will consider those for whom this would be their first Board position but evidencing an understanding and appreciation for the remit of the role will be essential. Connections to Chelmsford and the wider region would be advantageous but are not essential. We want individuals who believe in social mobility; able to champion on behalf of others and can help us provide genuinely inclusive and powerfully transformative education.
