About the School
Edinburgh Business School (EBS) is part of Heriot-Watt’s School of Social Sciences, which boasts a strong presence across the University’s campus locations in Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia. It comprises three academic Departments: Accountancy, Economics & Finance; Marketing & Operations; and Management. The Departments are home to world-leading academic staff across all major business disciplines including accountancy, economics, finance, marketing, human resource management, business law, operations management, logistics and supply chain management, strategic management, entrepreneurship, and enterprise development. The School of Social Sciences is also home to the Departments of Psychology and Languages & Intercultural Studies.

Detailed Description
We are seeking to appoint a Professor of Accounting or Finance in the Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance. Committed to collaborative working across traditional disciplinary boundaries, the successful candidate will provide leadership in research, learning and teaching within the Department and the wider School of Social Sciences. While the role will be based at the University’s campus in Edinburgh, the successful candidate will build strong links with colleagues at the Dubai and Malaysia campuses.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Learning and Teaching
- Teach and examine courses at all levels – undergraduate and postgraduate – through lectures, seminars, tutorials, coursework, and personal supervision.
- Act as a coach and role model through excellent learning and teaching practice and mentoring of colleagues.
- Provide leadership in the development, planning, organisation and delivery of learning and teaching activities (at undergraduate and postgraduate level) across the Department.
- Deploy expertise in curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, and assessment design in collaboration with colleagues across the Department, School, and University.
- Work within the University’s academic regulatory framework, in line with its enhancement-based approach to quality assurance.
Research and Scholarship
- Undertake high-quality research, leading to publication in international peer reviewed journals.
- Secure external research grant funding; encourage and support junior research staff in doing the same.
- Attend and present research papers at national and international conferences, Departmental and University seminars.
- Supervise and mentor research-active staff and postgraduate research students.
- Provide leadership in the development and delivery of research within and beyond the academic disciplinary area.
- Collaborate and strengthen research links with colleagues across the Department and wider University.
- Support collaborative working with external partners (e.g. universities, businesses, government, professional bodies).
Communication, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
- Be routinely involved in complex and important negotiations internally and with external bodies.
- Contribute to the communication of the wider University strategy within the School.
- Act as a senior arbiter in local disputes.
- Initiate new and original solutions to problems.
Collaboration and Networking
- Chair and participate in internal committees and participate in University-level decision making and governance.
- Take a leading role in senior external groups, (e.g., committees of learned societies or professional institutions, editorial boards, organising committees of international conferences, research council panels or government advisory groups).
- Develop internal and external networks to foster collaboration and share information and ideas.
- Promote the work of the Department, School, and University both nationally and internationally.
Planning, Management, and Resources
- Exercise academic leadership across teaching and research activities, supporting the allocation of workload to colleagues according to skills and capacity, within the School’s workload model.
- Appraise and advise staff on personal and career development plans.
Education, Qualifications and Experience
Essential criteria
- PhD in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Fluency in English.
- An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications confirming international standing.
- A commitment to high quality teaching, and the fostering of a positive learning environment for students.
- The ability to make a significant contribution to the management and leadership of the department.
- A commitment to collegiality and collaborative working.
- The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
- A personal commitment to the values of the University.
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship (or Senior/Principal Fellowship) of the Higher Education Academy.
