The Role
QuidelOrtho is looking for a Human Factor Engineering Intern that wants to spend their 2024 summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.
We are looking for a well-rounded, talented, and self-motivated rising sophomore, junior, or senior who possesses exceptional analytical, design, and presentation skills, is articulate, eager to learn, and interested in the rewarding challenge of medical device design.
This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 12-weeks.
Cohort 1: May 20th through August 12th
Cohort 2: June 17th through September 9th
This Intern will be onsite in Rochester, NY.
The Responsibilities
- Support the R&D Department at QuidelOrtho, on projects in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Developing an organized library of past usability findings and recommendations through learning and becoming familiar with usability test methodologies within the regulated medical device field.
- Performing data analysis on usability findings and identifying key opportunities for improvement for currently released or in-development products.
- Working closely with QuidelOrtho Human Factors Engineers to learn the human factors research and design process throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Shadowing Human Factors Engineers at cross-functional team meetings to gain exposure to the collaborative design process.
- Creating templates to standardize human factors activities, such as task analyses, across product platforms.
- Assisting QuidelOrtho Human Factors Engineers during formative usability studies, summative usability studies, or expert reviews by observing user interactions and collecting data for analysis.
- Collaborate with the R&D team to think creatively, challenge the normative, and improve the user experience in all aspects of our products and services.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
The Individual
Required:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Field of Study: Human Factors or Human Factors Engineering, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, or related fields.
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in the Fall Semester 2024 at an accredited university or college.
- Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Able to start on either May 20th or June 17th.
- Ability to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.
- Experience using MS Office Suite, especially MS Excel.
- Experience analyzing data and performing qualitative analyses.
- Solid understanding of user-centered design, including user research and usability testing.
- Knowledge of human factors principles as it relates to product design.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate and designs and recommendations.
- Ability to work within constraints, as well as to challenge constraints to support good design.
- Ability to be flexible and work independently on multiple different projects.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred:
- Rising Sophomore or Junior at an accredited university or college.
- Data/statistical analysis – Minitab.
- Technical writing skills, or the ability to write concisely and comprehensively.
The Work Environment
No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.
Salary Transparency
The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
