**THIS VACANCY IS FOR AN IMMEDIATE START, APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED **
About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Engineering at Diamond enables our scientists use synchrotron light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
About the Role
We now have an excellent opportunity for an innovative Engineering Graduate to join us as a Mechanical Design Engineer within the Diamond Accelerator Engineering team, contributing to the development of the new D-II Synchrotron; developing innovative equipment that enables World Class Scientific Research to take place at Diamond.
This opportunity is for an immediate start (likely early 2024). It is not part of an annual graduate scheme intake.
The Accelerator Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development, and construction of the new D-II synchrotron. The synchrotron is made up of three particle accelerators which will accelerate electrons up to 3.5 GeV to generate the intense light used by our beamlines.
The synchrotron consists of numerous mechanical systems including Ultra High Vacuum, Cryogenics and micron level motion and alignment systems.
Responsibilities will include:
- Working closely with internal engineering staff and other disciplines, to develop 3D CAD models and produce mechanical detail designs for projects.
- Developing and applying expertise in technologies including ultra high vacuum systems, stable support structures, precision mechanisms, cryogenics and the general detailing of scientific equipment and plant.
- Producing layouts, assembly drawings and detailed manufacturing drawings using PTC CREO and AutoCAD.
- Assisting with procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.
- Contributing to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises.
- Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and other documentation on projects.
About You
Candidates should have already graduated in an engineering discipline.
You should have experience in designing creative yet complex mechanisms or structures ranging from small devices with micron resolution to much larger fabricated structures; as well as skills and experience in some of the following:
- 3D and 2D CAD particularly CREO and AUTOCAD
- Design of precision mechanisms
- Design Ultra High Vacuum vessels
- Design for and Use of Additive manufacturing
- Design of high stiffness low vibration structures
- Design analysis tools such as FEA
- Data analysis & modelling tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Python etc
- Design for manufacture
- Use of novel materials.
You should enjoy interaction with other disciplines, have an excellent grasp of engineering principles and an interest in further developing your knowledge in the areas above.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme.
