Job title: Associate in Quantitative Approaches to Cyber Power

Company: University of Bath

Job description: 9 Months FTC

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the School of Management at the University of Bath. The post is part of a larger project on Cyber Statecraft in an Era of Systemic Competition. Our team will be focusing on Theory, practice and evaluation of cyber statecraft, specifically on cyber power in theory as well as new approaches to cyber power measurement and evaluation.

An ideal candidate will have strong analytical and quantitative skills, combined with the ability to bring together knowledge across political science, international relations, economics, and other relevant social sciences. Cyber security expertise and data analytic skills are desired but not essential.

The EPSRC Cyber Statecraft in an Era of Systemic Competition is an exciting collaboration between the University of Bath, King’s College London and Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). As an integral part of the team, the Research Associate will work on assessment, problematization and establishing new theoretical grounds for the central concept of power in cyber statecraft. This work will move beyond conventional distinctions between hard, soft and smart power and pay attention to the contextual and relational aspects of power currently omitted from leading theories and indices of cyber power. We will develop a new methodology for measuring cyber power and, by extension, its application to the evaluation of cyber statecraft with direct relevance to UK ability to assess the effectiveness of its cyber statecraft.
