NHS Blood and Transplant Principal Statistician at NHS Blood and Transplant

January 25, 2024

Job Description

Job Summary

Do you want to join a large, enthusiastic team of statisticians who help to save and improve lives? The Statistics and Clinical Research group of NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is responsible for the design and analysis of studies in organ and tissue donation and transplantation, blood donation and transfusion medicine. The group incorporates the NHSBT Clinical Trials Unit, which is responsible for the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials in all areas of NHSBT’s activity. The analysis and interpretation of results of all our studies inform decision-making on developments in donation, transplantation and transfusion, the clinical care of donors and patients, and equity of access to treatment.

A permanent opportunity has arisen for a Principal Statistician, tenable at our offices in Bristol, with hybrid working from home for some days if preferred. You will lead an area of statistical work in the team and engage in a broad range of statistical and management activities, with line management responsibility for a small group, and membership of the Statistics Management Group, which provides leadership for the team.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Co-ordinating, planning and managing the work of, and providing expertise in, a specialist area, such as kidney transplantation or the design and analysis of clinical trials.
  • Reporting results of statistical analyses of data to the NHSBT specialist Advisory Groups, the Department of Health, clinicians in blood and transplantation services and other interested parties.
  • As part of the statistics management team, co-ordinate, plan and allocate all statistical work of the service and provide leadership to the wider team.
  • Be responsible for the line management of a small group of statisticians, including mentoring them to support their development.

You may occasionally be asked to travel and spend time away from base, which may involve working irregular hours and overnight stays, with prior notice.
