Job description: Wye Valley NHS Trust and St Michael’s Hospice, in the beautiful county of Herefordshire, are looking to appoint to the final consultant post completing a team of three new senior doctors as a result of service expansion and retirement. The team provides medical leadership, direct patient care, training, teaching and opportunities for quality improvement and service development across WVT acute and community hospitals, Herefordshire and mid Powys community and St Michael’s Hospice.

This postwill focus on clinical services at Hereford County Hospital, working with an established specialist palliative care CNS team providing acute hospital inpatient consults and also outpatient work. It also includes the Clinical Lead role for the senior palliative medicine team. There is a wealth of opportunity for palliative medicine training and multiprofessional teaching supported by facilities at St Michaels Hospice and WVT including a simulation suite.

The post is 8 PAs with a 2.4 SPAs and a job plan which facilitates one day a week for non-clinical work. It includes 1 in 4 second on call to a very supportive and experienced team of doctors at the hospice.

Main duties of the job

The opportunity has now arisen to re-organise into an integrated team of three funded jointly by Wye Valley NHS Trust and St Michael’s Hospice, to provide palliative medicine input to the Hereford County Hospital the rural community of neighbouring mid Powys St Michaels Hospice and Herefordshire community including the community hospitals.

This post will focus on SPC provision to Hereford County Hospital and mid Powys, building on services which have a clear vision for further development through the evolving Herefordshire ICS Palliative and EOL Strategy and Powys LHB, incorporating scope for the post holders to develop new initiatives and specialty interests of their own.

This post will provide direct patient care through outpatient work,peripheral clinics and domiciliary visits and hospital consults where applicable.

Educational Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of interview, Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or European Community Rights.

Desirable

  • Higher Medical Degree

Experience
Essential

  • Experience in working effectively within a multidisciplinary team and specialist palliative care unit. with experience and confidence at consultant level
  • Ability to undertake palliative care assessments in a variety of settings including hospital wards, outpatient clinics, palliative care inpatient unit, and in patients’ homes
  • Ability to provide palliative care advice and support to other healthcare professionals in the palliative care team, hospital and community settings
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Desirable

  • Subspecialty training or equivalent

Research and Audit
Essential

  • Experience of research and ability to apply outcomes to clinical practice.
  • Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit.

Desirable

  • Relevant research published in peer review journal

Education and Teaching
Essential

  • Experience of teaching, including doctors and medical students.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary teaching.
