Contract type: Fixed-term for 12 months

Location: Blast and Impact Laboratory, Buxton, Derbyshire

Are you interested in working in one of the UK’s leading blast and impact research groups?

We are looking for a technician to provide technical and machining support at the Buxton Blast and Impact Laboratory. You will be dedicated to providing high quality research support contributing to the success of research within the laboratory and supporting the work carried out by academic colleagues.

The UoS Blast & Impact Laboratory, located in Buxton, Derbyshire, is unique among UK academic research laboratories, in that it has extensive facilities for conducting internal and external high explosive testing (up to a few kilograms TNT equivalent). This laboratory is a leading capability among UK plc. and has been used for many years to service academic, industry, and government research projects in the area of high-rate, high-energy, multi-parameter precision diagnostics. It is part of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield.

You will plan, design and manufacture specialist items to support our research activities, including using CAD to design components and produce drawing packs for offsite manufacture. You will work to support the research team members, staff and students in the execution of research experiments in accordance to the highest standards of professionalism, and health and safety. You will assist with general laboratory maintenance, including the ordering of supplies and maintaining accurate and tidy records of research work, data and engineering drawings.

You must have a Level 3 NVQ in machining or equivalent relevant qualifications or experience.
