Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Professional Services team in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) at King’s College London. We are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly motivated Community and Events Manager to support the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE).

The post holder will work closely with the Director of Commercial Operations and Partnerships (LIHE), as well as other professional services staff. They will be responsible for building, growing and maintaining a strong community between the members of LIHE. They will have excellent communication skills and be able to develop strong relationships with the community, consisting of Medical Technology (MedTech) startup founders, SMEs, industry partners, and academics and researchers. They will also be responsible for setting up, managing and delivering events relevant to LIHE members, partners and stakeholders.

The post-holder will be responsible for LIHE’s social media presence, growing the community through engaging content on relevant channels, internal and external. They will be responsible for maintaining and community through relevant software, platforms, and ensure that members feel engaged with the community.

This a varied role with exposure to different aspects of a high-profile project, and the role would suit someone with a natural tendency to network, and who can carefully listen to and engage with the members of the LIHE ecosystem.

This role is highly varied and will suit a candidate with excellent organisational skills who can work accurately, with close attention to detail in a busy environment with tight deadlines. They will have excellent communication skills and be able to develop good working relationships with the LIHE management team, the School’s academics and researchers, other core Professional Services staff across the School and College, but also a variety of stakeholders in the wider Medical Device (medtech) industry.

A significant part of this role will be developing strong relationships with individuals, and day-to-day problem solving / troubleshooting. This is a role for a people person. Hence, we are looking for someone charismatic, who is unflappable and excellent at solving problems at speed, under pressure.

The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE), part of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, is part of the vision for St Thomas’ MedTech Hub. The Institute is housed in a new building embedded within St Thomas’ campus, which will bring together King’s research excellence, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s leading clinical practice and the Medical Device sector’s commercial innovation power and talent, engaging multinationals, SMEs and start-ups simultaneously. Its vision is to accelerate the clinical impact of MedTech innovation by building robust MedTech ventures. It aims to become the hub of all MedTech activity in London and the UK by building a strong ecosystem of all key stakeholders in the industry.

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 3 years from the start date.

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing and executing a community strategy for LIHE members (startups, individuals, academics, industry partners etc.).
  • Responsible for maintaining and growing the LIHE community and ecosystem, including through the generation of relevant content on social media.
  • Responsible for organising and running all LIHE events in person, virtual and hybrid, in collaboration with event leads (where applicable).
  • Liaise with partners, catering and other external services for the smooth running of events, including AV teams.
  • Act as event point of contact and liaison for LIHE events, managing the event invitation and registration process.
  • Managing event budgets in collaboration with the LIHE’s Operations Director.
  • Production of key performance indicators on events.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria * Degree or equivalent level of qualification and/or experience

  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Track record in cultivating and sustaining a community of varied stakeholders
  • Track record in growing social media following
  • Track record in organising and running successful events of

100 attendees * Excellent IT skills, knowledge of using Microsoft packages, CRM systems, databases, and social media platforms

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Experience of project management or working as part of a project team
  • Familiarity of working with budgets and contracts
  • Proactive, flexible, creative, and enterprising approach to work
  • Ability to work as part of a team and understand and function in the different cultural environments of academia and business

Desirable criteria * Knowledge and understanding of Higher Education

  • Knowledge and understanding of deeptech and/or medtech
  • Experience of bid and proposal writing to secure funding
