Lecturer (Teaching) – Dissertation Supervisor (Mat Cover) at UCL

The Department of Culture, Communication and Media (CCM) is a department of IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. It is committed to excellence in teaching, research and consultancy in the areas of: Media and Cultural Studies, Art, Design and Museology; Academic writing; English education: Applied Linguistics; Music Education; Multimodality studies; Learning with Digital Technologies.

The MA Applied Linguistics and MA TESOL are two of four masters programmes offered by the Applied Linguistics, TESOL and Intercultural Communication cluster (ALTIC cluster) based In CCM. The two MA programmes explore language, language teaching and language learning from a wide range of perspectives. They are designed to develop understanding of key concepts and issues related to applied linguistics and TESOL and engage students in the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world situations, contexts and issues in which language plays a crucial role, while also exploring language education globally.

In option modules, students are given the opportunity to explore sociolinguistics and sociocultural theory; Second Language Acquisition; multimodal communication; materials development; the place of English and English language teaching in the wider world; and other topics. All students carry out a small piece of Applied Linguistics/ TESOL research for an MA Dissertation.

You will provide maternity cover on the MA Applied Linguistics and MA TESOL during the period specified above. The main activities are as follows: • Supervising 10 dissertations • Acting as personal tutor for ca. 15 students on the MA Applied Linguistics/TESOL programmes. • Supporting the running of the Dissertation module in the Spring and Summer terms of the 2023-24 academic year and in the Autumn term of the 2024-25 academic year. • Attending induction and standardisation meetings for the activities above as required. • Attending programme and team meetings as required. • Job-sharing will be considered.

You will have a PhD in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a related discipline and evidence of a good understanding of common approaches to research and research methodology. Experience supervising student research in Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, Language Policy, Global Englishes or related areas is desirable.
