Job Description

The Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University, The Jesuit University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Science Communication, to commence September 1, 2025. The position will be based at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, with the potential to contribute to the Bronx campus as well. The successful candidate will contribute pedagogically to the department’s undergraduate major in Communication and Culture but may also contribute to majors in Journalism and Digital Technology and Emerging Media. The candidate would also have an opportunity to teach in the Strategic Communication track of our M.A. program in Public Media, as well as other interdisciplinary programs across the university.

About the Position

We seek applicants with a robust research agenda and teaching experience that aligns with Science Communication. Areas of specialization might include (but are not limited to): public understandings of science; science journalism; science and/or science-related public policy; science misinformation/disinformation; media effects related to science, health, environment, or related areas; scientific rhetoric; environmental justice; science technologies; global/international initiatives in science, health, safety, environment, or related areas; science data collection and security; disaster and risk communication; ecology and sustainability; critical communication in science, health, environment, or related areas. Candidates can employ any number of methodological and theoretical approaches but should demonstrate pedagogical expertise in designing and teaching novel courses on science communication topics. Scholars focused on public/community engagement, historically marginalized and underserved communities, and those who take an interdisciplinary approach are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Communication, Media Studies, Public Health, or a related discipline, successfully defended by May 2025.
  • A strong research agenda and publication record.
  • Ability to teach courses in areas such as Science Communication, Communication and Culture, Media and the Environment, Health Communication, Strategic Communication, and original courses in their own subspecialty.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching.
  • Commitment to mentoring and advising students.

Fordham’s Department of Communication and Media Studies advocates the model of the publicly-engaged scholar and critically-informed practitioner who is civically and socially reflective and critical through analytical and/or applied means.
