Why is this role important and how does it fit into the team, department and wider firm?
We are seeking to enhance the government and infrastructure team through the recruitment of a junior solicitor who has hands on experience of either working with public sector bodies and/or suppliers to the public sector or a strong interest and desire to learn more about the sector. This person will deliver work with a particular focus on major projects, notably in the area of regeneration (e.g., housing and town centre schemes, including where there are joint ventures, or other innovative methods of delivery).
The vast majority of our work is non-contentious commercial advice for clients, acting for public bodies and for private sector organisations that have relationships with the public sector. Our advice includes:
- Major projects, particularly regeneration.
- Commercial agreements relating to collaborations, joint ventures and outsourcing.
- Alternative service delivery models, including wholly- and jointly-owned companies, mutualisation and shared services;
- Public law advice; powers, procurement, and state aid.
What does the role actually involve?
- Supporting other lawyers in the team, and across other teams when required, with all aspects of their work
- Providing advice to clients in accordance with the firm’s policy of using clear English, both written and oral
- Drafting a range of documents or supporting on more complex documents that support all areas of work covered by the team
- Time recording and meeting set targets in line with the firm’s policies and protocols
- Maintaining good links with existing clients and profile raising through, for example, attending networking events, which very occasionally involve evening and weekend commitments
- Writing articles for the website and other publications
- Keeping up-to-date with legal developments and sharing knowledge with the team
- Preparing and presenting training material
- Updating clients on matters in a timely matter and anticipating next steps
What technical skills are required for someone to be successful and enjoy the role?
- Experience of working as part of a team on large projects for clients, particularly where these involve the public sector
- Working with professional advisors from different disciplines
- Has experience advising on a wide range of commercial matters
- Excellent drafting skills for a wide range of commercial documents ideally
- Some knowledge of public law, such as the public procurement regime
