Associate Lecturer in Interactive Media at University of York

Job Description

We invite applications for the position of Associate Lecturer in Interactive Media to contribute to the University of York’s teaching in the creative technologies, primarily on its BSc in Interactive Media programme. This position will commence from 2nd September 2024 and will be available as a 0.7FTE appointment for a fixed term period of 10 months until 1st July 2025.

Department

The role will be held within the University’s interdisciplinary School of Arts and Creative Technologies (ACT). The School of ACT was established in 2022, and is a highly innovative unit which brings together research, teaching and commercial activities in the fields of interactive media, music, sound recording, film, television, theatre and the business of the creative industries.

The subject of creative technologies at the School of ACT is home to a lively and growing community of academics exploring technical, creative and socio-cultural perspectives on digital media, with expertise spanning human-computer interaction, user-experience design, games, accessibility, interactive film, XR technology, creative AI, sound recording, music production, audio culture and digital culture.

Role

The successful candidate will convene and teach on existing modules covering creative coding and programming, media production for 2D and 3D user experiences. You will also help deliver practical sessions on creative media programming and coding for arts, games and interactive media experiences using a variety of industry standard tools and techniques. You will also contribute to supervising and assessing final year projects, as well as performing assessment moderation. You will also be expected to undertake pastoral supervision duties.

The successful candidate will complement the dynamic interdisciplinary teaching team of the creative technologies that spans programming, design, media production, sound recording and humanities, and work with motivated and highly creative students in a rewarding and productive community.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Detailed knowledge of object-oriented programming, with a particular focus on the development of creative applications such as creative applications, interactive media, digital artworks, games, or responsive audiovisual projects. Experience with modern Javascript and p5.js is preferred
  • Knowledge of digital media production techniques and workflows for creating 2D and 3D interactive media experiences using the Unity game engine, and 3D modelling software such as Blender or equivalent
  • Postgraduate degree in relevant subject area (e.g. Interactive or Digital Media, Creative Computing, Computational Arts) or equivalent experience
