The individual will be based full-time at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST; 华中科技大学), China. 

Role Summary

The School of Biomedical Sciences is located within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS) at UoB. We are home to the highly successful BSc and MSci Biomedical Science programmes delivered on our Edgbaston campus in the UK and also at our University of Birmingham Dubai campus.

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at UoB has a strong partnership with Tongji Medical College (TJMC) at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST; 华中科技大学), China. Together with colleagues at HUST we have developed a new 4-year joint educational programme (JEP) with graduating students being awarded dual degrees (BSc Biomedical Science from UoB and Pharmacy degree from TJMC). The JEP will be delivered in its entirety in China, will be taught in English and is due to commence in August 2024.

We are therefore seeking to appoint a highly regarded Associate Professor in Biomedical Sciences. The individual will take significant responsibility for, and leadership of, the teaching and learning on the JEP, acting as the Programme Lead for the BSc Biomedical Sciences degree part of the JEP. The individual will be based full-time at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST; 华中科技大学), China. We are looking for candidates with extensive teaching and teaching leadership experience at undergraduate level, particularly in molecular and cell Biology.

The successful candidate will be in post by the latest July 2024 to allow for induction into the role.  Accommodation will be included for this post on the HUST Campus.

Person Specification

  • A PhD or equivalent in a Biomedical discipline.
  • Demonstrable excellence in delivering Biomedical education (to include human physiology), management and administration. 
  • Ability to be based in China.
  • TEFL or CELTA (or equivalent English Language teaching qualification) desirable.

Learning and Teaching

An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality.  Teaching quality demonstrated to be informed by an appropriate level of scholarship. 

  • Extensive teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
  • Extensive experience of module design, assessment and leadership, and expertise in delivering teaching across a range of biomedical subjects.
  • Experience of working in a programme management team.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others.

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied. Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action.
