British Journalism, Society & Culture, Lecturer (Part-time) at Boston University Study Abroad London

Boston University Study Abroad London is seeking a lecturer to teach a popular Core course in British Journalism, Society & Culture as part of our Fall 2024 London Internship Programme for American study abroad students. Starting on Wednesday 4 th September, teaching is for 5 weeks on Wednesdays & Thursdays (AM or PM slots) amounting to 40 classroom contact hours, plus final exam coverage for the course.

Core class dates for the course are as follows: 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th, 25th, 26th September; 2 nd and 3rd October. The final exam is scheduled for 10th October. Additionally, 4 th October is reserved as a contingency teaching day to be utilized if any lectures cannot be delivered as planned during the academic calendar.

This is a temporary appointment with the potential to be renewed.

British Journalism, Society & Culture

This course covers the workings of the British state and the obsessions and quirks of British culture so students can understand UK newspapers, and helps students build upon their own feature writing output from conception to completion. Students will be asked to notice, discuss and reflect, via observations and a range of reading materials and class discussions, British obsessions such as the weather, celebrity, the royals and the British class system, and draw parallels and distinctions between this and their own culture. Students will also be able to recognise the socioeconomic and cultural differences between individual British newspapers and their audiences, and British newspapers as a whole compared with those in their home country.

By the end of the course students will be able to discuss current events and stories in the press as they happen and feel confident that they understand the context and social reasons why these topics are being discussed at that moment in time.

Required Skills

The successful candidate will be a highly competent lecturer, possessing both significant professional experience and teaching expertise in Journalism. They will hold a minimum of a Master’s degree, preferably a PhD, in a relevant discipline. Applicants should demonstrate excellent cross-cultural communication skills and experience in teaching undergraduate students, preferably including American & international students.
