Additional Information

Established in 2011, CAER Heritage (CAER) has developed an innovative combination of community-focused archaeological digs, historical co-research and co-created art, animation, poetry and films, working in close partnership with community development organisation Action in Caerau and Ely (ACE). Setting out to challenge unfounded negative perceptions by uncovering a hidden history, the project has successfully tapped into one of South Wales’s richest, but least valued, heritage assets to create transformative educational and life opportunities in communities which face significant social and economic challenges. Working alongside local people to co-research the past and uncover new historical knowledge through community archaeology and history, the project has traced the origins of west Cardiff back over 6,000 years to the Neolithic. It has also instigated ambitious infrastructural development, transforming a local prehistoric monument into a community led heritage site. This has included the regeneration of a disused gospel hall into a vibrant community centre with trails, a playground, garden, and an ongoing accompanying programme of community development, volunteering and co-research initiatives.
