Catering and Cleaning manager

January 17, 2024

Job Description

Job title: Catering and Cleaning manager

Company: Girls’ Day School Trust

Job description: School name: Portsmouth

Required from: February 2024

Contract Term: Permanent

Hours: Full Time (36 hours per week); flexible working hours

Weeks worked: Full Year (30 days holiday plus bank holidays) or Term Time only (with 20 plus days)

Salary: GDST Regional Support Grade 4 (£30,000 pa, pro rata if term time only)

The role:

The Catering and Cleaning manager will ensure the provision of catering and cleaning support services, working to agreed service standards and financial targets. The ideal candidate will be confident in financial practices such as budget forecasting and procurement. Experience of managing staff and catering would be an advantage.

On a day-to-day basis, the successful candidate can anticipate managing the catering and cleaning budgets, ordering stock as needed, dealing with staff issues and ensuring H&S compliance.

Flexibility over working hours will be an important part of the role as catering and cleaning staff work a variety of shifts and support major scheduled school events. It is also anticipated that this role will help organise and provide catering and facilities cover when colleagues are absent. The role is offered on either a full year or term-time only basis.

The Department:

The school is based across three sites (the Prep school, the Senior school and the Science block). There are kitchens at both the Prep and Senior school sites. Following a reorganisation, catering and cleaning staff will be line managed together as part of a wider facilities department. The Catering and Cleaning manager will work closely with the Facilities Manager and the Estates and Transport manager to ensure a fit-for purpose site – an efficient, safe and pleasant environment which supports teaching and learning and the marketing of the school.

Caterers supply a lunchtime meal to staff and pupils and support occasional out-of-hour events and – like the cleaners – complete a deep clean during main leave periods. The majority of cleaners work part time after school hours.

The school:

Portsmouth High School has been educating girls since 1882 and is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) which is the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools. Pupils are happy, confident and ambitious giving them an unparalleled preparation for life. The school is located in Southsea, an attractive region on the south coast with excellent transport links. The area has retained much of its original Georgian character; notably, two of the school buildings were designed by architect Thomas Ellis Owen who was instrumental in shaping development of the local area.

We are a welcoming and caring community and pride ourselves on being a lovely place to work. The school offers a range of career opportunities both internally and more widely throughout the GDST network and is committed to staff well-being.

Benefits:

We offer a variety of benefits, such as:

  • Competitive salaries and pay progression
  • Access to extensive professional development opportunities
  • Training grants for qualifications
  • Generous pension schemes
  • Free life assurance benefit
  • A discount of up to 50% on fees for children at GDST schools
  • Employee discount benefits, financial advice and an employee assistance programme
  • A Cycle to Work scheme
  • Competitive terms and conditions of employment

Apply:

Applications should be accompanied by a letter addressed to the Headmistress outlining why you would be suitable for the post, plus the academic qualifications form.

Internal candidates should be aware that they will be shortlisted solely on the information presented in their application.
