Chair – University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust – Sussex – £70,000 for c. 3 days per week
Job Description
Job title: Chair – University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust – Sussex – £70,000 for c. 3 days per week
Company: Odgers Berndtson
Job description: Exceptional opportunity to chair one of the country’s largest NHS providers
The University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex) is one of the largest hospital trusts in the UK; we are a major trauma centre and tertiary care provider and we run seven hospitals across five sites with additional satellite facilities and community services. We are proud to put our patients first. Our 20,000 colleagues across Sussex are passionate about providing excellent patient care, every time for a population of 1.8 million.
UHSussex is now three years into its formation and building on the success of our current Chair, Alan McCarthy, whose term finishes in 2024, we are seeking to appoint an outstanding leader to take the Trust forward. This is a pivotal role in an ambitious organisation. We have built the foundations for greater future achievement through our investment in new clinical leadership, staffing, education, research and innovation.
However, alongside this time of opportunity, we do not underestimate the challenges that we face as a Trust and as a healthcare system. We recognise the inequalities that exist in Sussex, a region that is home to pockets of affluence as well as some of the most deprived wards in the country, with wide variation in life expectancy and health outcomes across the region. Indeed, Brighton, a city rich in diversity, experiences some of the widest health inequalities and UHSussex has a vital role to play, along with system partners, to improve population health for all our citizens. We are also facing increasing demand for our services with pressure on waiting times and access to services. We have an overall CQC rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ and have high levels of public, media and regulatory scrutiny.
The Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity for the right candidate to make a huge impact in our Trust and health system.
We are seeking a new Chair who can guide and influence our journey of improvement. We are a large and complex organisation and the successful candidate will be an outstanding leader who will live our values and help us to drive forward our vision. It will be important to lead from the front and, in partnership with our experienced and dedicated CEO and Board, inspire a positive, open and learning culture, building credibility and confidence with colleagues, partners, communities and regulators at all levels.
If you can demonstrate the leadership capabilities, share our passion for patient care and demonstrate an alignment with our values, we would be delighted to hear from you. In addition, we would particularly welcome candidates from groups currently under-represented at board level because we value the diversity of our colleagues and actively champion an inclusive culture, believing everyone should feel free to be their authentic self in the workplace.
If you think you have the drive and commitment to make a real difference and would like to learn more please see the candidate brief below or contact our recruitment partners at Odgers Berndtson on 020 7529 6314
Closing date for applications – Friday 9 February 2024.
Expected salary: £70000 per year
