Job description: We are looking to recruit substantive or locum consultants to our Community Paediatric team in Newham for 2024.These posts are an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic team within a multidisciplinary Community Child Health service in East London:Post 1 – Consultant Community Paediatrician (up to 10PA)Post 2 – Consultant Community Paediatrician with role as Medical Advisor for Adoption & Fostering for Newham (up to 10 PA)Main duties of the jobThe postholders will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive community paediatric service within Specialist Children & Young People’s Services and will include responsibilities in the following areas:(i) Clinical activities: a. Consultant clinics and related administrative work b. Clinical triage of referrals c. Clinical supervision as Consultant of the Day d. MDT clinical discussions or meetings e. Any clinical patient-related meetings(ii) Teaching: a. To contribute to departmental teaching b. To contribute to teaching of medical students particularly in relation to community child health services(iii) Management and leadership: a. Clinical Supervision b. Clinical governance c. Management supervision d. Pathway leadership(iv) Audit, Quality Improvement and Service DevelopmentIn the role of Medical Advisor for Adoption and Fostering, the postholder would be expected to conduct Adult Medicals for prospective adopters and provide input to the Adoption Panel, and medical reports for children and young people being adopted. Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Current full UK GMC registration and Licence to Practise

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree in related child health or medical speciality, e.g. MSc, MD, PhD
  • DCH, MBA or other diploma or higher degree in a relevant field

Professional training
Essential

  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Community Child Health or Paediatrics or equivalent (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) (CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application)
  • At least 2 years General Professional Training in Paediatrics and at least 2 years Higher Specialist Training or equivalent clinical experience in Community Paediatrics

Desirable

  • SPIN or Diploma in Paediatric Neurodisability

Clinical Knowledge
Essential

  • Extensive experience of working in a multidisciplinary Child Development Team and the ability to seek advice from, share experience with, and offer support to other team members
  • Competent use of Griffiths III or other similar developmental assessment tool
  • Experience in managing children with complex neurological and developmental problems
  • Competent in management of common general paediatric problems – acute and chronic
  • Up to date with Level 3 competences in Safeguarding Children
  • Competent in supervision of Child Protection Medical Assessments
  • Experience working in partnership with Education, Social Care and other stakeholders

Desirable

  • Specialist experience in Paediatric Neurology or other areas of related Community Child Health practice
  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health, eg. child mental health, obstetrics, public health, general practice
  • Training in autism diagnostic assessment tools, eg. ADI-R, ADOS, 3Di, DISCO
  • Competent in autism diagnosis assessments
  • Current portfolio in research

Medical
Essential

  • Collaborative approach towards working in a multidisciplinary team and complex system
  • Positive approach towards self-management, organisational skills, time management and task prioritisation
  • Has the ability to support and supervise trainees and SAS doctors

Desirable

  • Experience in clinical leadership of a multidisciplinary team
  • Current portfolio as an Educational supervisor
  • Evidence of change management skills
  • Completed a recognised medical management course
  • Has the ability and experience to undertake medical appraisals
  • Has experience in: -NHS complaint handling -Critical incident reporting -Staff appraisal -Risk management

Patient Safety
Essential

  • Has a record of completed audit projects, service development work and/or Quality Improvement projects
  • Knowledge and experience of Clinical Governance and its application to clinical practice

Desirable

  • Has experience in co-production and collaboration with service users
  • Has undertaken Quality Improvement training

Teaching
Essential

  • Has undertaken Quality Improvement training
  • Has experience of postgraduate paediatric teaching

Desirable

  • Has undertaken ‘train the trainer’ training
  • Current portfolio as a medical educator

Communication and interpersonal skill
Essential

  • Has good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to express complex medical issues in lay terms
  • Ability to empathise with people from different backgrounds and demonstrate cultural compentency
  • Ability to communicate with parents and children effectively, and to explain complex medical conditions and treatment
