Every year, Scottish Water is pleased to host a variety of summer internship programmes, open to university students in the penultimate year of their degree programmes.
Come and work on a paid internship placement with industry-leading teams who deliver services essential to the people of Scotland. This is your chance to hone your skills, learn from experts and plan the next leap in your career or studies.
You’ll be joining us at a fascinating time, as we endeavour to transform into a more agile, innovative organisation that provides truly excellent service, delivers great value for money, and operates in an environmentally sustainable way that goes beyond Net Zero.
We are delighted this year to be able to offer a 12-week Summer Internship from June to September 2024, specialising in Data Analysis.
What you’ll do
Everything we do at Scottish Water is underpinned by great data and information. Our Corporate Data Compliance (CDC) Team design, protect and govern our data, thus ensuring that we keep our data healthy and our business watertight.
The CDC team are focused on helping the business overcome its data and information challenges, making sure data quality is maintained, ensuring that privacy is protected and that the data and information is accessible to those who need it. This all helps the business make the right decisions, deliver our ambitions, and maintain the high standard of service our customers expect.
As an Intern with our CDC team, you’ll learn what data management and analysis is like in one of the largest water companies in the world. You’ll experience data wrangling and data analysis, whilst working with multiple stakeholders on a project that will provide valuable insight into Scotland’s ambition to achieve Net Zero Carbon.
This is a paid Summer Internship, with the salary being £23,177 (which works out at about £1,931 per month).
What you’ll need
You’ll be in the penultimate year of university, or maybe about to do a Masters. Either way, you’ll be on course for at least a 2:2 degree. And it goes without saying that you will be available for the full placement time: 12 weeks.
You will be studying towards a degree in Statistics, Economics or Mathematics, or any discipline related to data analysis.
As a hybrid role you will not need to come into the office every day, but you’ll need to live within commuting distance of one of our main office hubs, e.g., Edinburgh, Stepps, Dundee, Inverness.
In terms of essential requirements? That’s it.

What happens next?

Final face-to-face interviews will happen during February. Where you can give us a good grilling too.
If you accept a place on the programme, you’ll go through some pre-employment screening during the Spring, including a criminal record check.
All our new Interns will start together at the beginning of June for a 12-week Summer Internship, finishing at the end of August. You’ll learn more about the organisation, meet our leaders, visit some of our operational sites, start making friends, and have a lot of fun.
A few final things worth knowing…
