The Director of Engineering plans, implements, and oversees the daily operations of the Engineering Project Department, with focus on productivity, efficiency, and financial metrics including regimented profitable growth. The ideal candidate has a strong background in successfully executing engineering projects and exceeding customer expectations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Required to organize, plan, coordinate, and direct all of the necessary work and to work with the Director of Engineering Shared Services in allocating resources for the Engineering Department and projects.
- Utilize KPIs and metrics to forecast and monitor the performance of teams to ensure all deliverables are completed efficiently and as scheduled; Leverage data to inform strategic approaches, development of processes, and collaboration with senior leadership.
- Responsible for the day-to-day execution of clients’ projects. This includes scope of work, financial metrics, planning, schedule, quality, contractual compliance, safety, and client satisfaction.
- Provide leadership to Engineering Project Managers who are responsible both engineering only projects and full turnkey projects with multiple clients; managing project deployment, project execution, quality, cost, schedule and closeout. Manage changes and risk on scope, cost, schedule, and quality based on available resources and client requirements.
- Play key role with management of new hires, train, evaluate, coach, and counsel management staff within department
- Manage performance of direct reports. Motivate, coach, and mentor team
- Support a culture where core values are the foundation of how clients, employees, vendors and subcontractors all work together in the attainment of departmental business goals
- Other projects or duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities
- 8+ years of FTTX engineering experience, growing client relationships and leading teams delivering turn-key solutions consistently on time and within budget with 5+ years in a senior leadership role
- BS degree in Business Management, Project Management, Engineering, or equivalent level of experience in a leadership position within utility construction industry is preferred
- Ability to operate at a strategic level, yet remain close enough to the details to add value to clients and be a supportive resource to the team
- The ability to effectively lead and communicate clear expectations, goals, and vision to a diverse group of team members at all levels
- Strong process orientation. Uses process implementation to drive efficiencies and cost containment
- Strong computer skills; Proficient in MS Office including Excel, Microsoft Teams, and Adobe software applications
- Positive, solutions-oriented attitude with strong analytical, and innovative problem-solving skills; ability to organize and prioritize tasks to completion in a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required; ability to clearly, professionally, and effectively communicate and interpret technical information
- Ability to work after hours, some weekends, and evenings when needed
- Ability to travel as needed to perform duties of the position up to 50% of the time
- Ability to make hard decisions in a short timeframe.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, driving a vehicle, and/or standing
- May experience long hours of standing and moving
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
