Company: Habton Farms

Job description: Habton Farms is a 1,600ha, family-owned farming business. Located in North Yorkshire, the land lies between Pickering, Malton and Kirkbymoorside.

There are five main commercial elements to Habton Farms:

  • Arable Farming – over 1,000 ha of predominantly grade 3 clay soils with the current rotation comprising of combinable crops, hemp and land let for vining peas and potatoes.
  • Sheep Fattening Enterprise – lambs are currently bought in either at foot or as stores and fattened on extensive pastures, stubble turnips and a mixed ration.
  • Hay & Haylege Making – Both temporary grass leys and permanent pasture is utilised to make racehorse quality hay and haylege in-hand.
  • Racehorse Training (Habton Racing) – the farm’s activities compliment the racehorse training business through the provision of feed, maintenance, and use of farm machinery.
  • Residential and Grazing Lets – A number of annual grazing agreements are in place, along with externally managed residential lets.

The business is owned by the Easterby Family. The Farm Manager is in daily contact with the family, working alongside them to fulfil aims of objectives.

The People

People are key to success at Habton Farms and we are fortunate to have five, full-time employees, including a farm foreman. All of whom are skilled, motivated employees capable of working as a team. A sense of humour and a strong work-ethic is very much promoted!

Technical Skills & Innovation

We pride ourselves on the use of technology, particularly on the arable enterprise. Much of the farm machinery is fitted with GPS technology. Yield mapping, variable rate application and farm recording Software such as Gatekeeper, LandApp and MyJohnDeere is employed. This has benefitted the business offering greater efficiency, transparency, and cost-saving.

BASIS & FACTS qualifications are advantageous in this instance but not essential.

Brief for a new Farm Manager

  • The family have a variety of interests, with farming being at the heart of them. Productive and efficient farming practices are dovetailed with multiple Mid-Tier CSS agreements.
  • We are looking to appoint a Farm Manager who will look to continue to grow the business with a dynamic and flexible approach.
  • The individual will lead and motivate a diverse team of people in order to deliver on strategic goals.

Candidate

  • The Farm Manager will report directly to the Easterby Family. They will be given a high level of responsibility but will also be expected to liaise with members of the family and external advisors.
  • An appreciation for the changing political nature of agriculture, nature and external factors that shape the business’s environment must be observed.
  • The individual must be able to think for themselves but be mindful to the commercial goals of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effective day-to-day management and timely implementation of the administrative running of the business.
  • Strategic planning including crop rotations, soil nutrient management and stewardship agreement areas.
  • Purchasing inputs and stock management
  • Oversee staff development, training, and recognition.
  • Lead by example, always ensuring professionalism both internally and externally.
  • Ensure that health and safety plans, risk assessments and all other matters of general farm compliance are observed, recorded, and implemented safely and effectively.
  • Work effectively alongside the racing yards to ensure that the needs of both businesses are met.

  • A remuneration package will be offered commensurate with experience, including the availability of accommodation, a vehicle and private healthcare.
