Fly Laboratory Technician at University of Sheffield

Job Description

Contract Type: Fixed-term with an end date of 31 August 2025.

Location:  Main Campus, Firth Court

Reporting to the Fly Senior Technical Specialist you will work within the existing laboratory team to ensure researchers have the equipment/resources needed for their activities. You will maintain Drosophila stock lines, make growth media using specialist equipment and order consumables. You will be dedicated to providing high quality research support contributing to the success of Drosophila research within the university and supporting the work carried out by academic colleagues.

Applicants must have 5 GCSEs A*-C/ 4+ including English, Maths, Science and ICT, or a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship (or equivalent experience) along with knowledge and understanding of the relevant safe systems of work for culture media preparation, equipment, Drosophila work, and use of cryogenic materials. Laboratory experience of fly stock maintenance to ensure healthy accurate Drosophila for research and teaching purposes and appropriate manual dexterity to maintain fly stock collections are also essential.
