Job Description

The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized research-oriented comprehensive public university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. UM is placed No. 145 in the THE World University Rankings and placed No. 285 in the QS World University Rankings. With a scenic campus of approximately 1 km2 on Hengqin island, UM has achieved significant progress in the past decade as evidenced by its rising international repute, state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and the establishment of three State Key Laboratories in microelectronics, Chinese medical sciences, and internet of things for smart city. The Department of Communication

The Department offers programmes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Bachelor of Social Sciences in Communication, Master of Arts in Communication and New Media, and PhD in Communication Studies. Programmes offered by the Department cover a range of areas across communication, including media studies, journalism, public relations, marketing, digital journalism, and creative media. Teaching expertise is complemented through research expertise in the areas of media and journalism, public relations, public communication, qualitative and quantitative media analysis, cultural studies and intercultural communication. The Head of Department

The Faculty of Social Sciences seeks to appoint an internationally accomplished scholar to lead the Department of Communication. The appointment will be made at the rank of Professor, Distinguished Professor or Chair Professor. The candidate should have strong credentials including an international research profile, a distinguished record of academic achievements, exceptional leadership and management skills, and strategic vision. While the post is open to all areas and methodological approaches of media and communication studies, we are especially interested in candidates with an established international reputation and whose academic expertise is relevant to the concerns of Macao and the Greater China region. The successful candidate will possess: 

  1. A PhD degree in communication, mass communication, media studies, or related fields;
  2. Expertise and knowledge in one or more sub-disciplines such as research methodology, journalism, advertising, public relations, new media, and/or international/intercultural communication;
  3. An outstanding record of internationally-recognized research and scholarship;
  4. A proven record of excellent teaching;
  5. Demonstrable competence in management, planning, and communication;
  6. Ability to play a leadership role in the Department;
  7. Proficiency in English is required as it is the working language, while knowledge in Chinese or Portuguese will be an advantage. 

Remuneration

Remuneration will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
