Job description: We are looking for two candidates to help pioneer our new Independent Travel Training Programme. North Somerset is embarking on a new and exciting endeavour as part of our Pathway to Adulthood project. The project aims to help support young people with SEND to learn and develop the skills they will need to access their local communities, support networks, and develop greater independence in adulthood.About the roleYou will engage in one-on-one support and facilitate young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), in developing independent travel skills via public transportation and active travel. In addition you will be involved in community engagement and promotion of the Independent Travel Training Programme.Your responsibilities will include evaluating children with SEND to determine their readiness for Independent Travel Training and documenting session progress through reports, along with conducting dynamic risk assessments to inform future training strategies.This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closed by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.About youYou must possess a comprehensive understanding of individuals with diverse special/support needs, both children and adults, acknowledging their entitlement to autonomy and the challenges they encounter. Experience in engaging with and supporting individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is essential. Additionally, you will demonstrate dedication, motivation, adaptability, and a positive demeanour.Proficiency in IT tools, particularly Word and Excel, is required, along with the ability to manage and update data proficiently and adhere to safeguarding and data protection principles. Effective teamwork skills and the capacity to manage and prioritize caseloads are vital, as is the capability to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.You will be provided with access to accredited training materials for the travel trainers course, empowering them to excel as Independent Travel Trainers.Why North Somerset Council?We understand working for a local authority is more than just a job.
