Salary: £28,498 per annum
Hours: Full time – (80% part-time will be considered)
Contract Type: Fixed Term – Until March 2025 with the possibility of extension.
Location: This role is primarily based in Polaris House Swindon, however hybrid and flexible working arrangements are available. Occasional travel may be required to our London office.
Division/Section: International Relations team

This role is to contribute to the work of the International Relations Directorate by providing project management support to international funding activities and strategic planning activities. This exciting role is critical to MRC’s mission to improve human health, through world class medical research.

You will be part of a team responsible for the delivery and monitoring of MRC’s Global Health funding schemes and calls under the International Science Priorities Fund (ISPF). There will be opportunity to support a variety of activities across the directorate.

Main duties / key responsibilities:

Providing administrative support for international funding activities including the African Research Leader (ARL) scheme, the Applied Global Health Research Board (AGHRB) and funding activities under the International Science Priorities Fund (ISPF):

  • Responding to queries from grant applicants: To be the first point of contact for grant applicants who are interested in applying to the schemes.
  • Application processing: Provide administrative support using in-house systems (training will be provided) to deliver MRC funding schemes. Working as part of a team to ensure tasks are delivered to time.
  • Peer review: Overseeing the process, by which applications are assessed. Providing support to colleagues as well as responding to queries from reviewers approached. Identifying and managing conflicts in peer review.
  • Funding meetings: Organising and attending funding panel meetings. Liaising with applicants, panel members, and MRC staff to ensure smooth running of the meetings. Managing scoring and logistics on the day.
  • Drafting documents: Drafting papers for funding/strategic meetings, providing input to grant application guidance documents, working across the office and with external partners.
  • Grants management: Supporting applicants throughout the duration of their award by being the first point of contact to manage enquiries received.
  • Financial monitoring: Supporting the Global Health manager by working with award holders and MRC and funding partners finance teams to monitor UK and overseas awards, including additional due diligence of high-risk awards.
  • ISPF monitoring: Assisting as appropriate in the management and reporting of MRC’s ISPF activities. This includes providing budget management support, for example recording and monitoring ISPF spend/commitments against budgets and budget forecasting. Coordinating financial reporting.

Providing administrative support for strategic planning activities:

  • Supporting partnership working with stakeholders including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
  • Supporting global health capacity strengthening activities.

This is a flexible role and applicants will be required to conduct any other duties or projects appropriate to the post’s band as agreed with their line manager, for example ad hoc support for special projects and assisting with peer review of grant applications for other MRC teams.

Interactions:

Close working relationships will be required with:

  • Staff working at partner organisations including Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC). Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
  • International and Global Health Programme Managers within the International relations team and across the office
  • Other MRC staff, particularly colleagues working in finance, policy and the Board and Panel teams.
  • Applicants for MRC funding
  • Peer reviewers and those who select peer reviewers

Education / Qualifications / Training required:

Essential:

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

Previous work experience required:

Essential:

  • Experience of working in an administrative environment within a team

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a research funding or scientific environment
  • Experience of working in an international environment

Knowledge and experience:

Essential:

  • Evidence of being able to follow process and for using own initiative to progress projects.
  • Experience of delivering to deadlines within tight timescales
  • Ability to work on multiple areas and independently prioritise workload
  • Ability to proactively manage own time
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

  • Excellent IT skills, especially in MS Outlook, MS Excel, and MS Word

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of grants processing
  • Experience of resource planning and management, or supervisory experience
  • Experience of querying databases

Additional information:

N.B. There is a requirement for regular travel to Board and Panel meetings (usually in London offices), which may require overnight stays.
