Job description: We are inviting applications to the clinical fellow posts in the Critical Care department at King’s College Hospital ( the department covers both the Denmark Hill and Princess Royal University Hospital sites: shortlisted candidates are asked to express a preference at interview). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience of working in a large tertiary Critical care department under the mentorship of consultants with a range of tertiary hospital sub-specialist interests (including, but not limited to: major trauma neurology and neurosurgery cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery haematology including haemato oncology).The successful applicants will be assigned to one of 7 critical care units (6 based at the Denmark Hill site in South London, with a further 1 unit based at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley), where they will work as part of the team of 9 resident doctors. The residents are responsible for the day-to-day management of patients on the critical care unit, under the supervision of a consultant intensivist.Each unit has at least two on-call resident doctors during the day and one overnight. The critical care units are supported by a team of senior clinical fellows (SCF) and advanced critical care practitioners (ACCP) as well as the unit’s on-call consultant.The residents will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients on the critical care unit, under the supervision of a consultant intensivist.Main duties of the jobCommunication and representation

  • Assisting in the day to day management of inpatients
  • Attendance at consultant ward rounds
  • Attendance at clinical meetings
  • Liaising with other members of the critical care team, from all different specialties and documenting findings and plans in the critical care admissions documentation

Strategy and Planning

  • To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the trust.
  • To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility
  • Prompt completion of e-discharge summaries. Education and Training
  • To ensure at all times that you comply with the general medical council’s published guide good medical practice including the duties of a doctor.
  • Teaching medical students as directed

Job responsibilitiesThis advert is designed to appeal to doctors with little or no prior critical care experience, who are considering a career in critical care. The doctors applying to this post will usually be suitable to work on one of the resident rotas. Doctors applying for this post cannot be sponsored for GMC registration, therefore they must hold GMC at the point of application. They should be familiar with the NHS, but do not need to have worked in critical care before.Main responsibilities include but not limited to medical student inductions, clinical/ward commitments, research/auditing, participation of meetings, medical student teachings and medical school admin.Person Specification
Qualifications/Education
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • FRCA/MRCP/MRCS or equivalent

Professional/Statutory Registration
Essential

  • Holds full registration and licensing with the GMC at time of appointment

Previous Experience
Essential

  • Experience of working with the NHS
  • Ability to provide a complete employment history with no unexplained career gaps
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
  • Interested in ICM as a potential career

Desirable

  • Experience with intensive care, medicine and/or anaesthesia
  • Demonstrable research experience
  • Demonstrable teaching experience

Skills, knowledge and ability

  • Valid adult life support (ALS) certification
  • Airway Competencies

  • ATLS

  • Good standard of written and spoken English to facilitate communication with patients, healthcare professionals and other staff
