Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes at University of Reading

Job Description

We are looking for an 0.8 FTE Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes, for a 12-month fixed-term period, who will have Academic Language and Literacy (ALL) Liaison responsibilities within Reading’s In-Sessional provision, the Academic English Programme, and will contribute to work on the EAP Assessment Team, including in delivery of Summer Pre-sessional assessments.

The International Study and Language Institute (ISLI) is one of the University’s academic Schools and has a longstanding reputation for its expertise in English language teaching and assessment. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic community with a global outlook and a focus on teaching excellence.

As an ALL Liaison, you will work with one or more Schools to maintain and develop the In-sessional English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) provision for their student cohorts. As a member of the EAP Assessment Team, you will work with others to author and edit EAP exams, and you will lead exam delivery in person or online. For the latter role, you will be expected to work during July, August and September and able to take most annual leave outside these months.

EAP Lecturers are on teaching-intensive academic contracts, and you may also be required to teach across one or more of ISLI’s other programme areas: the International Foundation Programme, the Pre-Sessional English programme, ISLI Short Courses, or the University-wide Global Graduates modules.

You will have:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification (Applied Linguistics/TESOL/EAP) and ideally a Level 7 teaching qualification (DELTA, DipTESOL, PGCE)
  • Experience of EAP or ESAP course design and delivery
  • Experience of cross-university communication (e.g. with academic Schools and/or with functions such as Admissions), in an EAP context
  • An interest or experience in creating EAP assessments
  • Experience (on a smaller or larger scale) of organising delivery of tests or exams
  • Experience of working effectively and collaboratively within a team

Interviews will be held: 29th or 30th May 2024
