Lecturer in Scandinavian Studies at The University of Edinburgh

The Department of European Languages and Cultures, part of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, invites applications for a Lecturer in Scandinavian Studies, with a specialisation in Danish. The lectureship is tenable from September 2024 on an open-ended basis.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic colleague, delivering and convening courses on Danish/Scandinavian (and aspects of Nordic) culture, literature, society, politics and/or modern history, as well as Danish language, at all levels of the degree programme, and will develop research-led courses within their field, as well as contributing to team-taught comparative modules offered across the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. The post-holder will play an active role in the administrative tasks of the Department and School.

The appointee will be a world-class researcher in Scandinavian Studies with a portfolio of publications. They will bring their research expertise in Scandinavian (especially Danish) culture, literature, society, politics, or history to be a core part of our research environment. The post-holder will be expected to collaborate with other colleagues in the School as part of a broader effort to decolonise our curriculum and critical lenses.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in a relevant field and show a developing profile of international excellence in research and publications, with a potential for attracting research funding, and a proven ability to supervise postgraduate students.

Your skills and attributes for success:

• PhD in a relevant area.
• Fluency in written and spoken Danish to degree level, with excellent oral and written communication skills in Danish and English.
• Experience of teaching Scandinavian Studies at university level with clear potential to enhance the student experience.
• Experience of teaching Danish language to non-fluent speakers at university level.
• A developing profile of international excellence in relevant research and publications.
• Evidence of ability to supervise student work at all levels.
