Job Summary: Mechanical Design Engineer within the New Product Development Team, responsible for development of Atlas Copco’s next generation of smart, sustainable and industry leading Self-Pierce Riveting equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Responsibilities
- To carry out design, development and testing activities for new Self Pierce Riveting (SPR) products
- Produce 3D CAD models and drawings to a high standard (including use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
- Ensure designs are fit for purpose, can be manufactured, assembled and meet the needs of the customer
- Support engineering testing activities through assembling test equipment, writing test documentation, liaising with test engineers and taking a ‘hands-on’ role in testing
- Support the lead engineer and project manager/scrum-master with ensuring engineering activities align with the company’s lean-agile phase gated development process
- Support the Mechatronics Engineering Manager by investigating opportunities to integrate data collection and data driven services within existing and future SPR equipment products
- Support the Mechatronics Engineering Manager by identifying and implementing methods to reduce product carbon footprint and energy consumption across the SPR equipment product range
- Collaborate with and provide engineering information/advice to internal and external stakeholders within quality, purchasing, manufacturing and assembly teams
- Collaborate with external suppliers to develop new product, testing and manufacturing solutions
Process / Standards / Compliance
- Understand and comply with internal product development processes and standards to maintain compliance with ISO 9001 and IATF 16949
- Apply standard product design methods and techniques (e.g., DFMEAs, FEAs, DVPs, lifecycle analysis, and product risk assessments and compliance) and assure the appropriate level of engineering rigour during product development and in service
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal design standards

- Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Company
- To work in a professional manner that supports the Company’s policy for health and safety (inc. Covid-19 measures), environmental, engineering, lean engineering, and quality control
Attend training courses and actively seek CPD activities to continue your professional development
Education / Qualification / Skills
Essential
- Formal academic qualification(s) in product design, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or related scientific / engineering discipline or equivalent experience obtained from working in relevant engineering industries and roles
- 2+ years engineering experience in a mechanical engineering/product development role
- Experience of working with 3D CAD and spread sheet packages for engineering applications
- The ability to plan their own work load to ensure overall success of the project
- Able to conduct practical engineering aspects (e.g., equipment assembly, test rig setup, test activities)
- Able to understand, interpret and find resolutions when reviewing engineering data, test results of engineering calculation/analysis.
- Able to confidently apply rules for; measurement, instrumentation, inspection and Geometric, Dimensioning & Tolerancing (G,D&T)
- Good communication skills and be able to produce technical reports to a high standard.
Desirable
- A proven track record of engineering on products from concepts through to production
- Experience with Solid Edge and Teamcenter (or similar PLM system)
- Have worked in an industry supplying machinery for use in a high production environment (i.e. automotive) where reliability of production equipment is high
- Working and theoretical knowledge of pneumatics, electrical components and hydraulics
- Experience of Industry 4.0 enabling technologies
- Familiar with instrumentation, electronic and electrical measurement techniques
