Job Description

Job title: PhD Studentship: Liquid Hydrogen for Aviation, CFD/AI Modelling (ENG1707)

Company: University of Nottingham

Job description: Location: UK Other
Closing Date: Thursday 01 February 2024
Reference: ENG1707

Applications are invited to undertake a PhD programme, in partnership with Airbus, to address key challenges in supporting the adoption of green liquid hydrogen for aviation use. The successful candidate will be based in the Mechanical and Aerospace Systems research group (previously known as G2TRC) within the faculty of Engineering and will be part of a supportive team of 50 researchers, technicians, support staff and academics.

Liquid hydrogen is being explored as a fuel for aviation. This requires research to enable fuel systems to be adapted for cryogenic operation, including the prediction of phase change control. This project will generate a robust modelling approach to create a design tool for future cryogenic fuel systems. Having a design tool allows the fluid condition to be predicted and enables fluid temperature and pressure control approaches to be assessed. Computational Fluid Dynamic and AI approaches will be assessed, together with low order modelling approaches, to establish the best modelling approach to provide an effective design tool for industry.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated person with a rigorous approach to research. Applicants should have, or be expected to gain a high 2:1, preferably a 1st class honours degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related degree. A good knowledge and/or experience in fluid mechanics with a keen interest in thermodynamics/thermal management is essential, as is the ability to work well in a team. Prior experience in the areas of CFD or AI approaches for Thermofluids or in cryogenic fluids would be an advantage.

The successful applicant would be expected to spend part of the PhD period based in Bristol at the Airbus site and will receive supervision support and training from both the University and Airbus. The successful candidate will gain experience in cryogenic Thermofluids modelling to support net zero flight and have opportunities to become involved in practical aspects of fuel system design and testing during their PhD.

The PhD studentship will cover fees and tax free stipend of £22,000 p.a. for 4 years. Due to funding restrictions this studentship is only available to UK (home fees) citizens. This PhD is due to start on or before 1 October 2024.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Carol Eastwick, carol.eastwick@nottingham.ac.uk

Interested in this studentship? Applications with a CV, cover letter and academic transcripts should be sent to Adam Morgan adam.morgan4@nottingham.ac.uk

Suitable applicants will be interviewed, and if successful, invited to make a formal application.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
