Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in Climate Change Impacts on Aviation at University of Reading

Job Description

The lift force generated by a departing aircraft depends on air density, which decreases with increasing air temperature. Hot summer days can lead to take-off weight restrictions, which are expected to increase in frequency as the climate changes. They can also lead to reduced climb rates, increasing aircraft noise levels experienced by local residents. These issues represent significant pain points for airports. This project will analyse future trends in aircraft take-off weight restrictions and noise levels at a representative sample of European airports. It will lead to an improved understanding of the impacts of climate change on aviation.

You will have:

  • a PhD in atmospheric science or a closely related subject (e.g. physics, mathematics), or shortly expect to obtain one, or equivalent research experience
  • strong scientific analytical and computing skills
  • experience in analysing, manipulating, and visualising scientific data
  • effective communication skills, both verbal and written
