The opportunity
University of the Arts London (UAL) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated post-doctoral service design researcher (PDRF) to support an interdisciplinary team from Leicester University, and UCL, to create a bundle of interventions to optimise practices in the pre-analytic blood culture pathway (from the point of blood sampling through to transport of samples to the laboratory, testing and feedback) in acute care. This work will be undertaken in three NHS hospital trusts and will investigate situational and organisational factors that impact on blood sampling practices and the prescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics within 24 hours of patient admission from emergency departments.

The critical research involves working collaboratively with researchers and stakeholders using a range of design methods and tools to map practices and processes of the blood culture pathway. Core to the work is the use of design ethnographic work, visual mapping and converging and creating data visualisations and prototypes to engage stakeholders in participatory activities to tackle the barriers of optimising practices. The work aims to deliver a significant impact by conducting an initial evaluation of the feasibility and usability of the co-designed interventions at the three NHS sites.

About you

  • Experience conducting post-graduate (doctoral) research (desirable).
  • A post-graduate degree (PhD) in a relevant subject area (essential).
  • An awareness and experience of the challenges of working collaboratively (essential).
  • An interest in antimicrobial resistance and healthcare contexts (desirable).
  • Knowledge and expertise in service design research methods, including mapping, the creation of co-design tools and participatory practices (essential).
  • Demonstrable experience of co-ordinating, facilitating, and synthesising co-design workshops and the developing of prototypes (essential).
  • Experience in managing a research website (desirable).
  • Proven ability to work independently and prioritise work tasks (essential).
