Job Description

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is the UK’s leading and most diverse centre for applied marine and freshwater science, and rank in the top 5% of over 2,500 international institutes publishing in the same fields. We work with government, industry, NGOs, and other researchers in the UK to help ensure a sustainable blue future for all, and tackle the serious global issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, food security and pollution.

Based in the data science and statistics team, you will provide strategic leadership on the application of AI, machine learning, computer vision, and data analysis, to enhance Cefas science delivery (e.g. image analysis for marine monitoring) and capability (e.g. use of large language models). You will use your detailed technical knowledge to advise senior leaders on AI strategy and application, and work with IT specialists to specify big data storage and scientific computing requirements. There will be opportunities to develop and lead projects and build networks, with the expectation of publishing innovative, high-impact collaboratively research outputs.
