The Department of Physical and Biological Sciences of University of Huddersfield is seeking to appoint a research assistant to join a new MRC-funded project titled “A novel anti-biofilm peptide from fish for the combat against antimicrobial resistance”. This project aims to explore the effect of BING, a fish-derived antimicrobial peptide, against bacterial biofilm formation, a key contributor to antimicrobial resistance.
Our department is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities including cell culture suites for growth of mammalian cells and microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes, molecular cell biology labs, advanced confocal, widefield, and super-resolution microscopies, mass and NMR spectrometers, an extensive range of HPLC and GC equipment. A group of researchers are working on fundamental and applied research projects including drug discovery, genomics, bioinformatics, and chemical biology.
You will participate in the research project under the supervision of Dr Yun Wah Lam. Your responsibilities will include the maintenance of bacterial strains (P. aeruginosa and Uropathogenic E. coli), and the performance of experiments including soft agar bacterial motility assay, Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC) assay, RT-PCR and Western blotting.
You will hold a Masters degree in a relevant field and be working towards a Doctoral qualification. Experience in laboratory techniques related to bacterial culture and molecular biology, such as MBEC assays, Western blotting, and PCR, will be an advantage.
