Research Associate (Fixed Term) at University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Microbiome Function and Diversity group of Dr Alexandre Almeida (https://microfundiv-lab.github.io/) at the Department of Veterinary Medicine.

The team specializes in the application of large-scale metagenomic approaches to investigate the role of the human gut microbiome in health and disease. For this position the candidate will be expanding the group’s research to explore other members of the microbiome (archaea, fungi, and viruses) and their roles in gut health. The project will involve the processing and analysis of thousands of metagenomic datasets from various disease states and geographical sources to identify multi-kingdom taxonomic and functional signatures of health and disease. This will involve the development and application of computational genomics methods, combined with machine learning and advanced statistical approaches.

Applicants should have a PhD in Microbiology, Bioinformatics or a related discipline. Essential skills are experience with high-throughput sequencing data, microbial genomics, machine learning and programming skills in Unix (bash), Python and R. A good understanding of microbial physiology and biochemistry would be an advantage. The candidate must value teamwork and collaboration, and have good interpersonal skills.
