Research Associate in Energy System Modelling and Combustion Study of rDME and SAF at University of Sheffield

Contract type: Fixed-term for 30 months
We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for someone with a passion for advanced energy technology who is looking to use their skills in developing holistic energy system models for energy analysis, optimisation, and the integration of process and combustion simulation with chemical process modelling of an energy plant. Additionally, the post holder will carry out other duties that are appropriate to the post of a Research Associate at Sheffield, for example, providing support and supervision to less experienced researchers, and actively exploring new research areas and potentials for new research funding.
You will be joining the Energy 2050 research team in a large and diverse academic Department working within a team of world-leading scientists with over 50 research fellows and PhD students. The key aspects of the role include carrying out a modelling research programme focusing on the investigation of dynamic simulations for system optimisation and whole systems performance assessment for the production and utilisation of renewable and recycled carbon DME (rDME). In addition to this, this work will also focus on the numerical investigation of the combustion performance and emissions of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), by developing new sub-models and integrating them with process simulation and process modelling tools. Throughout this project the applicant is expected to publish work in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, as well as attending conferences and seminars.
You will also be part of the wider bioenergy research consortium – Supergen Bioenergy Hub. The Hub is funded jointly by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and is part of the wider Supergen Programme, with the vision to enable and stimulate the development of a sustainable UK bioenergy sector.
The role provides an excellent opportunity to apply your knowledge of chemical kinetic modelling for combustion and/or atmospheric chemistry applications (e.g. Chemkin) and develop your transferable research and leadership skills. If you have a good first degree (or equivalent experience) in Mathematics, Physical Science, or Mechanical and/or Chemical Engineering, plus a PhD or be close to completion of a PhD (or equivalent experience) in the subject area or a closely allied discipline, you are encouraged to apply.
Since the role involves significant collaborations with partners, you need to be willing and able to travel potentially overseas. You will also need to have a good knowledge and experience of combustion, chemical kinetic, and process simulation software.
