Based in the Department of Chemistry, CIEC is a unique industry-education centre, recognised for its expertise in creating and maintaining a diverse range of initiatives to inspire pupils and teachers about science and its vital importance to our UK manufacturing base. The Centre has an established reputation for delivery of high quality continuing professional development to enhance science education and improve mutual understanding between industry and schools.

The appointee will build upon research previously carried out into the impact of CIEC’s Children Challenging Industry (CCI) programme and other similar small evaluation projects on children’s and teachers’ attitudes towards science and STEM careers by assisting with the design of research instruments, collecting data from teachers and students, and industrial partners who offer ambassador and site visits to children.

Role

  • To plan and manage all simultaneous research-related activities and projects 
  • To conduct research and evaluation on the impact of all CIEC programmes, including the Children Challenging Industry (CCI) programme, on children’s and teachers’ attitudes towards science and STEM careers
  • To identify potential research inquiries within existing qualitative and quantitative datasets.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in science education or similar
  • PhD in educational research
  • Knowledge in science education to engage in high quality research
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research

This role is available on a part time basis for 22.2 hours per week and is fixed term for up to 15 months.
