January 27, 2024

Job Description

Role Description

The University of York’s Department of Computer Science is seeking to recruit one Research Associate/Research Fellow to conduct research on long-term adaptation of autonomous systems under uncertainty.

The post is for work in the context of the Horizon Europe project AI4WORK, whose objectives involve developing socially-acceptable and trustworthy planning and adaptation solutions for robotics and autonomous systems. The research work will involve developing self-adaptation techniques for verified plan synthesis and task allocation in collaborative environments. These techniques could be based on Markov Decision Processes and reinforcement learning,  considering system dynamics (such as resource location, availability, uncertainty), contingencies, and changed priorities.

The candidate should have a background of excellent research across at least one of AI, Software Engineering or Robotics, as well as willingness and aptitude for collaborating closely with the project partners.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Research Associate (Grade 6)

  • PhD, or in final stages thereof, in AI, Software Engineering or Robotics. Significant experience in these areas may be considered in lieu of a PhD.
  • Strong programming skills (preferably using Python/C/C++/Java).
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience both within and outside academia, both orally and in writing, using a range of media

Research Fellow (Grade 7)

All of the above and in addition:

  • Strong research track record in AI, robotics and autonomous systems, or a related discipline, e.g. human factors, machine learning, to engage in high quality research and development.
  • Proven ability to participate actively in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance.
  • To contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding.

Research Environment

You will join a large and internationally leading team who specialises in AI and software engineering, with a substantial research track record and success at delivering research results as part of big, collaborative research projects. The team includes five permanent members of academic staff, six research associates/fellows, and 20 PhD students. The team is highly supportive and encourages cross-project collaboration, especially on joint publications and the development of new research projects.

Project Duration:

The post is available on a fixed-term basis until 31 December 2026.

Interview date: To be confirmed
