Research Fellow at University of Westminster
Job Description
This post is full time, 35 hours per week and is fixed term for 33 months.
The AHRC-funded project, An English Teacher in Paris: John of Garland’s Dictionarius and Medieval Language Learning is seeking a fixed-term Research and Innovation Associate to join the project team.
This project examines John of Garland’s Dictionarius to answer questions about the languages of everyday urban life, multilingualism, and educational practices in medieval England and France. An Englishman teaching in thirteenth-century Paris, Garland presents a snapshot of medieval urban life in the guise of teaching essential Latin vocabulary through the medium of French. Garland supplemented his Latin text with a Latin and French commentary providing grammatical and etymological explanations. The manuscripts of the Dictionarius thus reflect everyday life in an urban space and the changing vocabulary used to describe it.
The post holder will join the project team for the duration of the project. As a Research and Innovation Associate, they will be expected to perform a range of research duties, including, but not limited to:
- transcription of manuscript images and incorporation of transcription into XML
- linguistic analysis of data using lexicographical tools
- preparation of a digital and print edition of the text using a range of editorial tools
- contribution to scholarly presentations and articles
To complement the skills of the research team, we are seeking a post-doctoral scholar with experience in palaeography and digital editing. Working conditions are flexible, with much of the work completed remotely, though semi-regular in-person meetings in Central London with the team will be expected. Candidates selected for an interview will be expected to complete a short transcription task to demonstrate their skills in this area.
