Research Technical Specialist at University of York
Job Description
Role Description
Department
The Protein Production and Molecular Interactions Laboratories, part of the Bioscience Technology Facility, Department of Biology are seeking a Research Technical Specialist to support the production, characterisation and assessment of recombinant DNA polymerase proteins. The role is funded through a successful Innovate UK program grant and will be based in the recently merged Protein Production and Molecular Interactions groups in collaboration with NunaBio Limited. The TF-PP/MI group is part of a collection of specialist core laboratories and focuses on all aspects of recombinant protein expression and characterisation. It is also involved in direct technology research programmes through grants and commercial collaborations. Full details of NunaBio Limited and the instruments and services available within the facility can be found at:

Role
The Protein Production and Molecular Interactions Laboratories are seeking a new post to support and develop the production of recombinant DNA polymerase enzymes, principally using bacterial expression systems, up to fermentation scale as required; including protein purification and QC; and to take products through to assessment of enzymatic properties. The appointment forms part of a grant-funded research project and external collaboration. The Laboratory Head and company partner (NunaBio Limited) will need to delegate specialised work in this area in addition to the overall aims of the work package. In addition to this requirement, the role holder is expected to use their experience to help support all other lab activities, at the Grade 6 level.
Working as part of the team in the integrated production and characterisation group, the role holder will be expert in recombinant production and will need to:
- Have a high level of expertise in relevant experimental techniques (sequence analysis and construct design, recombinant expression platforms, protein purification, protein quality control)
- Take responsibility for experimental design of research programmes
- Consult with and report directly to external clients
- Produce and deliver materials and analysis to agreed standards
- Present data and represent the laboratory at scientific and other meetings
The role holder will need the ability to function in a client-oriented environment and to devise approaches, acquire, analyse and troubleshoot data, and optimise protocols in response to project demands as well as manage projects. Support and guidance will be provided by the Laboratory Head but the Role Holder will be required to work largely independently and alongside colleagues.
The post is full time (37 hours per week) and is on a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
- Degree in an appropriate science discipline or equivalent level of knowledge (PhD desirable)
- Demonstrable background knowledge in recombinant protein expression including molecular biology, microbiology and troubleshooting
- Willingness to learn new techniques such as NanoDSF and similar approaches
- Demonstrable, in depth experience in protein production
- Proven ability to work independently with initiative, using problem solving and analytical skills
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and external stakeholders
