Senior Turbomachinery Engineer
Job Description
Job title: Senior Turbomachinery Engineer
Company: ZeroAvia
Job description: From 19-seat regional trips to over 100-seat long-distance flights, ZeroAvia enables scalable, sustainable aviation by replacing conventional engines with hydrogen-electric powertrains.
We are leaders in zero-emission aviation, flying the world’s largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. We have a team of passionate innovators dedicated to bringing safe, zero-emission flight to aviation, with locations in Kemble, Sandwich and London in the UK, and Hollister, California.
To date, we have secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly our 6 seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain, passed significant flight tests, and are on track for commercial deliveries by 2023. Our achievements to date have been rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member to the UK Jet Zero Council.
Our powertrain development focuses on integrating hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cell systems, and electric motors, delivering a solution that will be not only without carbon emissions but also cheaper to operate. Commercialising the solution requires the establishment of a new clean aviation ecosystem, encompassing hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and tackling public perception of safety.
Role Overview
Integrating a novel propulsion system within existing aircraft designs is an important opportunity in decarbonising aviation. To meet this challenge, ZeroAvia has identified key technologies to develop in house. Turbomachinery is one key technology identified and has a strong backbone within the industry to develop a novel technology. In order to succeed in this endeavour ZeroAvia is looking for a Senior Turbomachinery Engineer with experience in Structural and Dynamic analyses of Turbomachinery.
The successful candidate will be working closely with an experienced team of enthusiastic engineers. Within this team you will provide your expertise in Turbomachinery and rotating equipment structural and dynamic analyses to solve problems and drive towards certifiable designs of current and future turbomachinery products. You will provide your knowledge towards products and assessments from a low TRL feasibility perspective to products intended for flight and certification. You will bring knowledge of industry standards and practices in analysing Turbomachinery in terms of stress-free & prestressed vibration/modal, flutter & forced responses, hot and cold geometry conversion, strength & durability, burst & overspeed, limit & ultimate load analyses, and containment analysis.
To succeed in this role a strong background with structural & dynamic analyses in Turbomachinery is required utilizing computational methods (FEA) as well as hand calculations and an ability to explain the results and implication clearly. Knowledge of EASA, FAA, and CAA certification basis is a benefit, especially those pertained in CS-E or FAR 33. Knowledge of aircraft integration and how CS23/CS25 plays a role is a bonus.
Requirements
- Perform structural and dynamic analyses on compressors, turbines, and other Turbomachinery. These analyses may include, but are not limited to, blade & disk vibration, forced response, crack propagation, rotating stress, limit & ultimate loads, hot to cold conversion analysis, thermal conduction analysis, CTE analysis, tolerance analysis, burst speed analysis, burst pressure analysis, containment analysis and etc. Knowledge of shafts and gears are a bonus, but not required.
- Derive loads and compressor performance limits in accordance with certification requirements.
- When necessary, draft statement of works for external contractors. Perform reviews and sign off on contract works.
- Interface with wider team to assist with manufacturing best practices, material selections, and turbomachinery integration to test stand and aircraft.
- Willingness to assist wider ZeroAvia team if certain expertise are needed.
- Willingness to learn about other parts of the business and contribute to best practices in design and analysis as required.
- Provide guidance to junior engineers learning the skillsets.
Requirements
Experience and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or an appropriate field with the correct level of technical depth and experience.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Turbomachinery Structural and dynamic analyses. Knowledge of shaft, gears, and bearings on top are a bonus, but not required.
- Knowledge of gas turbine application especially in aerospace.
- Knowledge of certification standards such as CS-E and FAR33
- Expertise in FEA and modelling methods for FEM (Defeaturing, symmetry sector cuts, etc).
- Knowledge of Solidworks or similar CAD packages
- Ability to understand and capture requirements quickly and communicate with internal and external stakeholders effectively.
- Ability to develop tools and methodologies to help upskill surrounding teams and junior engineers.
- Excellent level of English (Written and spoken)
- Able to work on own initiative, being part of a small team.
- Ability to wear different hats and assist colleagues as necessary and appropriate.
Diversity and inclusion
ZeroAvia is an equal opportunity employer and as a young company in the aviation industry, we value diversity and need people of different backgrounds that bring a plethora of skills, perspectives, and mindsets to the table that can spur originality, imagination, and creativity.
