Job Description

St Hilda’s College invites applications for the post of Stipendiary Lecturer in English for two years from 1 October 2024, with the possibility of renewal. The person appointed will hold a doctorate in English, or be close to completion (and will need to have submitted their doctorate before taking up the post.

During term the post-holder will be required to provide eight contact hours’ tutorial and/or class teaching each week averaged across the eight weeks of each term to undergraduate students in Old and Middle English Language and Literature (up to c. 1550), and in the study of the English language up to the present day. Candidates will also be expected to assist with administrative and organisational matters concerned with English in St Hilda’s, to provide pastoral support to students, to take part in activities related to undergraduate admissionsand to contribute to activities designed to promote the study of English in the College.

The appointee will be paid on a scale from £20,325 (point 1) to £21,555 (point 3) per annum (current rates) according to experience and qualifications, and membership of the USS pension scheme is offered. There is a research allowance (payable against receipts) of £300 per annum. The Lecturer will be entitled to five meals per week (either lunch or dinner) free of charge during Weeks 0 to 9 of each term, with additional out-of-term entitlements, for example during the admissions period. The Lecturer will have the use of a teaching room (which may be shared) in College and will be a member of the Senior Common Room at St Hilda’s College.
